The DIY Video lab at the iSummit '08 focused on how you 'do' open video including how to produce and distribute open video.

The lab had the following goals:
  • For participants to gain a good understanding of the copyright challenges for those involved in producing and disseminating open video, as well as some of the solutions available to film makers in managing the copyright of open video content;
  • For participants to collaborate on developing a draft checklist that instructs those who want to know more about what quantifies 'open video';
  • For participants to gain insights into the lessons learned from video activists in getting their message to stakeholders and achieving the desired impact.
The first session of the lab provided the opportunity for participants to get to know each other and each other's work. A discussion took place around the goals and outputs above.

Mimi Ito, one of the conference chairs of the 24/7 DIY Video Summit, discussed DIY Video during Session 2, and showed some film clips that were produced from the DIY Video Summit event.

In Session 3, some visitors from the Open Business lab joined the DIY Video participants to look at the impact of the Internet on independent production and distribution of film and video and new business models that change established ideas of how we incentivise and reward innovation.

The management of copyright in the production of open video was the subject of Session 4. The discussion included the sourcing of open stock footage for open video projects, correct licensing and attribution, legal resources and sensible distribution channels for open video.

Session 5 scrutinised the use of open video as a tool for activism and social change by drawing on the participants' own experiences in this field. They shared these experiences and a 'best-practices' discussion was held.

Session 6 provided the lab participants time to finalise their feedback on what was achieved during the lab and what the future plans for this lab will be, which was all presented to the iSummit community in the final plenary feedback session.
